Last year, I began aggressively looking for replacements for all the toxic household cleaners I use on a regular basis. One of the hardest things to find was a reasonably priced powder dishwasher soap that actually got my dishes clean. After trying several different products and alternatives, I decided to give Biokleen’s Automatic Dish Powder a try, and I’m glad to say I’ve found what I was looking for.

I was attracted to the fact that its Phosphate and Chlorine free, using oxygen bleach to clean my dishes instead. Its not tested on animals, nor does it use any animal ingredients. The label also proudly lists all the toxic ingredients it does NOT contain, and that it contains nothing the ACGIH or EPA consider pollutants or hazardous to people. It has a Grapefruit Seed and Orange Peel scent – it smells good as I’m loading up my dishwasher’s cups, and leaves my dishes at the end of the cycle smelling clean. The thing that I was rather pleasantly surprised by was when reading the ingredients list, it ACTUALLY INCLUDES grapefruit seed and orange peel extracts! All of which means than when my dishwasher reaches its “dry” cycle, it doesn’t fill up my kitchen with chlorine gas. Instead, it smells good.

Biokleen’s dish powder is highly concentrated. You only need to use 1 tsp per load, split between the cups, which means the 2 pound container lasts FOREVER. I purchased mine in June, run a full load every 2-3 days, and still have about half the container left. I also really like the packaging – because its so concentrated, it doesn’t take up much space under the sink. Its also made from recyclable #2 plastic; this means if I can’t find a way to re-use it once its empty, I can recycle it easily.

This is a product I highly recommend, and personally plan on using for as long as it remains available.
