I was born with severe allergies. I was allergic to sugars and protein, so needless to say I could not eat anything other than breast milk. The doctors thought that I would never be able to eat regular meals, and that I would have severe, life threatening asthma before I was three. Luckily they were wrong. I started eating regular food before I turned 2, but still had severe allergies to lots of things.
Allergies have a tendency to change, disappear, and appear through out your life. However, there are some allergies that may stay with you forever. One of my allergies that stuck with me, was my allergy to cat dander. It is bad enough that I can not even touch a cat without my eyes swelling up and getting red.
One medicine that I took that helped with my cat allergies, was Claritin. My boyfriend has a cat, and whenever I would go over to his house, I would have to take a Claritin so that I could see. That was the only allergy that Claritin helped though. Every night I took Benadryl to keep from getting bad allergy headaches. My nose was still stuffed up, and if I ate anything I had a slight allergy to, I would get sick and need to take more Benadryl.
When I moved to Las Vegas last year, I moved in with my boyfriend and his cat. It was not too bad for a while, because the house we rented was all tile, no carpet. So the dander did not build up as much. However, I still could not touch the cat without have problems. Finally I decided to talk to my doctor and find out what she had to recommend.
She prescribed Zyrtec. I had never taken this medication before, but hoped that it would help. I started taking it once a night, and that was the first time I did not take Benadryl at night in a long time. I woke up with absolutely no allergy headache! Double bonus was that Zyrtec also did not make me overly sleepy and I did not have any trouble waking up in the morning! I was amazed!
The only problem with Zyrtec was that it was the most expensive medicine I had to buy. With the co-pay, it was $40 for a 30 day supply. That was at Walmart, where my other medicines were only $4 each. I was willing to pay the price for Zyrtec, because it really helped my allergies.
Then, last year, Zyrtec became an OTC drug! I was so happy! It was still expensive, but I knew sooner or later there would be a generic brand that would not be as expensive. Until then I was more than happy to shell out the $25 at Walmart for the brand name. The benefits that I received from Zyrtec far out weighted the price, which was really the only negative I could find with the drug.
I also started giving my oldest son Zyrtec when it came out over the counter, and it has helped his allergies as well! His were never as severe as mine, but they would bother him often enough to warrant keeping allergy medicines in the cabinet just for him. Now that we have Zyrtec, the other medicines hardly ever get used.
