About a year ago, I decided to try to find a high fiber cereal to eat in the mornings, as I knew that I wasn’t getting enough fiber in my diet. I remembered advertisements for a cereal called “Fruit and Fiber,” but I couldn’t find it on the shelves, and concluded that it must have been discontinued as a product. I did see Fiber One and Fiber One Honey Clusters as choices, and I chose Fiber One Honey Clusters because it sounded like it would taste better and more interesting than a cereal just called Fiber One. I like it so well that I eat it every morning for breakfast now!
The first thing that concerns me about what I’m eating is whether or not it tastes good. A food can be the healthiest thing in the world for you, but if it tastes bad, good luck getting it down. Fiber One Honey Clusters is made up of two elements; whole grain flakes and “honey clusters,” - it is slightly sweet, very crunchy, and it tastes pretty good in skim milk. My daughter, who is 5 years old, has also been snatching bites of this cereal from me for a while; she calls it “Mommy Cereal” and she thinks it is great stuff. The honey clusters really do add something - crunch, sweetness, and interest. I think the flakes themselves would be okay, but boring. (Thus, I never buy plain Fiber One cereal ).
According to the box, one serving of Fiber One Honey Clusters is composed of one cup of the cereal. I don’t think I even eat that much; probably it’s closer to 3/4 of a cup, but I find this to be enough for me for breakfast. However, for most people this might not be true; I am rarely hungry in the morning, so I don’t eat much. For a bowl of cereal, I think it’s filling, but I do believe most people will want something more along with it.
Eating foods high in fiber has multiple benefits; fiber-filled foods tend to be more filling, they can help your cholesterol levels, and many of them also have cancer-fighting properties. The most immediate effect is probably on digestion, and bowel habits in particular. For people experiencing constipation, eating Fiber One Honey Clusters for breakfast could help alleviate the symptoms. I actually take a box with me whenever we travel, especially since we tend to eat a lot of pizza and things with lots of cheese in them on the road. Eating Fiber One Honey Clusters, drinking enough water, getting enough exercise, and trying to remember to eat fruits, vegetables, and other whole grains should help prevent or alleviate constipation. I would caution that adding too much fiber to one’s diet too quickly can also lead to gastrointestinal stress - be warned!
The nutritional listing on the side of the box includes significant amounts of Calcium, Iron, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12, Phosphorus, Magnesium, and Zinc. Looking at the ingredients list, I am pleased to see how much of this cereal is whole grains - but there is also more sugar than I would have guessed. In addition, there is a small amount of sucralose - an artificial sweetener - which may be of concern to some people.
Ingredients: Whole Grain Wheat, Corn Bran, Wheat Bran, Inulin, Sugar, Whole Grain Oats, Crisp Oats (Rice Flour, Whole Grain Oats, Sugar, Malt Extract, Salt, BHT [Preservative]), Brown Sugar, Corn Syrup, Toasted Oats (Whole Grain Oats, Sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Soybean Oil, Honey, Brown Sugar, Molasses), Salt, Wheat Bits (Whole Grain Wheat, Corn Starch, Corn Flour, Sugar, Salt, Trisodium Phosphate, Baking Soda, Color Added), Barley Malt Extract, Honey, Modified Corn Starch, Malt Syrup, Tripotassium Phosphate, Color Added, Cinnamon, Natural and Artificial Flavor, Sucralose, Walnut Meal, Almond Meal, Nonfat Milk, Vitamin E (Mixed Tocopherols), and BHT added to preserve freshness.
I really like Fiber One Honey Clusters and I will probably continue to eat them for breakfast as long as they available. They taste good and I want that extra dose of fiber in my diet. 4 stars.
