There is no word more accurate in reference to Avon, the cosmetics manufacturer that continues to grow with the changes while remaining a classic, than the word “Classic”. Avon is the 57′ Chevy of cosmetics.
Historical Trivia: Women have been selling Avon since 1886, 34 years before they had the right to vote. In 1939, the same year that Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz made their debut, Avon was given its name by David McConnell, who began the business as the California Perfume Company when he discovered that the rose oil perfume he was giving away was the reason people were buying his books. The name itself is a tribute to William Shakespeare, the author’s favorite playwright. Mrs. P.F.E. Albee was Avon’s first representative and the first products were fragrances including Violet, White Rose, Heliotrope, Lily-of-the-Valley and Hyacinth. Not only is Avon a “classic” cosmetics brand, but the trade mark resides inside a number of homes as “classics” that have become more familiar and indispensable to the average customer than salt and pepper. Avon is a name consumers trust because the company has proven themselves worthy of the average customers trust by surviving the tests of time and growing stronger through adversity.
Avon was started as a fragrance business and, thankfully, the company had the sense to keep their scents as charismatic and concentrated as those first Rose oil perfumes that sold David McConnell’s books to readers. Wild Country is one of those scents many men couldn’t imagine leaving home without. The after shave is described by Avon as a soothing formula scented with the fragrance of bergamot, anise and coriander, and is currently priced at $15.50 for a 4 FL. OZ. Bottle (002-993). The scent is available in a cologne spray, cologne splash, after shave, after shave conditioner and a roll-on antiperspirant deodorant.
The scent is masculine, earthy and even rugged, with only a hint of romantic charm, yet not over powering the way some of the more woodsy scents for men can be. Most of the men who use this scent will return again and again, stocking up on the fragrance that has become a favorite among men and the women who share their lives. While I have sampled a number of Avon’s more expensive and provocative colognes for men, I continue to agree with the majority of customers who have noses that persist in remaining loyal to Wild Country.
Basic Facts:
Anise Seed, native to Greece and Egypt, is one of the oldest known aromatic seeds. This seed can be used to scent perfumes and soaps, flavor toothpastes and mouthwashes, and even in herbal teas as a stimulant capable of controlling nausea. In biblical times, taxes could be paid with Anise Seeds and there is an ancient belief that these licorice-flavored seeds will bring good luck, probably the reason Europeans put the anise seed into their wedding cakes.
Bergamot is a citrusy essential oil with rejuvenating effects. The scent is light, fresh, fruity, and is used extensively in perfumes. The oil can be used for balancing oily or sensitive skin, treating psoriasis, restoring a lost appetite, strengthening the immune system and treating ulcers. When blended with floral scents like ylang-ylang or juniper, Bergamot can capture the sense of scent like no other odor.
Coriander is another fragrant herb with multiple uses. Besides providing perfume manufacturers with the lemon-sage scent they use so frequently, Coriander can be found in cigarettes, gin and sausages, and has a stimulant behavior. If the herb is used too freely, though, it can actually have a narcotic effect, possibly an explanation of its use in cigarettes and gin.

As someone who enjoys sampling new things, including fragrances that appeal to me, I have made every effort to change the men who have crossed my path with new and novel versions of expensive, heady fragrances that I’m sure they might have loved if they hadn’t experienced the magnetic pull of Wild Country before I happened through. I have finally come to the realization, though, that these impassive men are impervious to my most stubborn efforts to bring them authentic and affectionate assistance with their sense of scent experimentation. These men remain, as I have come to accept and even agree with, fully faithful to this familiar classic from Avon called Wild Country. And, finally, I have embraced serenity by accepting the unchangeable fact that Avon’s Wild Country really is a classic fragrance worthy of fidelity.
