Nail Polishes

Essie seems to be one of the more popular lines of nail polish, right next to OPI and Zoya. I had only heard great things about Essie, so I always wanted to try them. I received a package from a friend, which was totally unexpected, and inside was Essie Munis Mauve and Essie Bachelorette Bash. I finally had my chance to try Essie!

::: The Product :::
Essie was created in 1981 by Essie Weingarten. The line started with only 12 nail polish colors, and 3 treatments. Now, there are over 200 permanent shades, and 4 new seasonal collections are released each year. Of the 12 original shades, 4 are still best sellers, including Baby’s Breath. One of the most popular shades is Ballet Slippers, which is similar to OPI Bubble Bath, only it’s sheerer and more pinkish.

Essie nail polishes are available in a variety of finishes including: Frosted, Shimmer, Glitter, Sheer French Manicure, and French Manicure. Colors range from iridescent, barely there to rich, blacks. There’s sure to be a color for everyone! Essie nail polish comes in a clear glass bottle with a white cap and the company name is “raised” in the glass. Each bottle holds approximately 0.5 ounces of nail polish.

::: My Experience :::
As I mentioned earlier, I had always heard great things about Essie nail polishes. I never really bothered looking for the brand, as I’ve been happy with OPI. I’ve learned when I stray from what which I’m familiar with, I end up not liking the results. In the case of Essie Munis Mauve, I was partially right.

Munis Mauve is considered to be “a frosty purple, to make nails dazzle.” The color is purple, but more towards a mauve as the name indicates. There’s a slight hint of gold to the polish, which makes it even more gorgeous. I would consider this to be more of a Frosted shade than a Shimmer, but it does have a sense of shimmer to it.

I had given Munis Mauve a test run when I received it, and wasn’t particularly worried about the streakiness upon my test swatch. I held on to the polish for quite some time before finally trying it. It took about 3 coats to get the color to look as it did in the bottle, as well as to ensure I didn’t have any streaks. Mind you, this was on my toenails. As soon as I got to coat #2 on my nails, I knew this wasn’t going to work well on me. It’s one thing to have 3 coats of polish on your toenails, but not on your fingernails… Especially when even on coat #3 I still had streaks!

Knowing the Nail Care board on Makeup Alley is a great source of information, I quickly browsed looking for any tips/tricks on how to prevent the streaking. I had already used a ridge filler, which was one of the suggestions. In my browsing, I did learn that Essie seems to be a hit or miss brand. Overall, most consider it a great brand, but there are some colors and finishes that streak more than others.

As for lasting power, I guess it’s okay. I did have to reapply another coat to my big toenail after a few days as it wore off the top of the nail, but I’m not sure if that wasn’t from any of the shoes I wore up to that point. While I won’t give up on Essie totally, I do hope any other colors I get in the future aren’t a streaky mess for me!

::: Purchasing & Pricing Information :::
Essie nail polish retails for anywhere from $6 - $8, depending on the store or website. You can get Essie for $3.50 from head2toebeauty.com, and for $4.95 from ballbeauty.com.

::: Recommendation :::
Well… I wouldn’t recommend this shade, unless the person doesn’t mind applying three coats to not have streaks. Ballet Slippers seems to be a highly recommended color, so I’m guessing it doesn’t streak like Munis Mauve. I would recommend Essie nail polishes, but I would say “Buyer Beware of Streaks!”
