I remember the first time I put on a pair of New Balance athletic shoes. I was a poor graduate student and was searching for the right pair of sneakers, sturdy, yet very comfortable. An enterprising salesman noticed I was having trouble deciding and handed me a pair of New Balance shoes. I put them on and was in heaven, even though the $70 pricetag was a bit steep for me at the time. Eight years later, I’ve been through several pairs of New Balance athletic shoes. I have yet to find a pair quite as comfortable as the first ones I owned, but overall I’ve been pleased with the brand.

I purchased my pair of New Balance W 513s in the spring of 2007. These shoes, which cost about $50, are lightweight and appear to be made for runners. I remember choosing them after trying on a number of different pairs of New Balance shoes and thinking they were the most comfortable and attractive of the lot. They are white and made of leather and white mesh, with silver and periwinkle accents. The soles are mostly black rubber with an AbzorbEx cushion in the heel. The AbzorbEx cushion is supposed to make these shoes gentler on the feet during high impact activity.

I wore these shoes on a regular basis until this past spring, when I started having some trouble with pain in my left heel. I decided to try a different pair of athletic shoes and bought a pair of Jack Wolfskins. Unfortunately, though they were twice as expensive as my New Balance 513s, the new shoes did not solve the pain problem and in fact, made it worse. I ended up putting the Jack Wolfskins aside and am now back to wearing the New Balance 513s regularly. I still have pain in my left heel and ankle, but it’s not as bad as it was. Oddly enough, the pain is only really bad when I wear athletic shoes of any kind and it’s only in the left heel.

One thing I don’t like about the New Balance 513s is the fact that there is mesh at the toe instead of leather or canvas. I often wear these shoes when I walk my dogs in a grassy field. Usually, these walks occur in the morning, when there’s still a lot of dew on the grass. Consequently, I often end up with wet socks by the end of our walks.

On the other hand, these shoes have held up pretty well over the past year. I don’t wear them every single day, but they do get regular use. While I’m no runner, I do get dragged regularly behind a couple of hyper beagles. So far, I don’t see any signs that these shoes are falling apart, though the soles are starting to get pretty worn. I still have the original laces, too.

I guess once these shoes conk out, I’ll buy another pair of New Balance shoes, since they don’t seem to hurt my feet as much as other brands do. Unfortunately, my next pair of New Balance shoes will not be 513s, since they appear to be obsolete now.

I remember the days when I could wear any shoes and not have to worry about pain. I guess this is one of the yuckier aspects of getting older and fatter.
