My husband and I both wear LL Bean slippers, and in honor of the Sole for Souls promotion at Epinions, I am sharing my thoughts on the Mens LL Bean Moosehide Scuff.

Description

I call this a slipper, (so does Hubby), but it’s really a scuff, or slide on slipper. It is made of a very soft moosehide leather, with a light tan colored rubberized sole. It is available in only the natural tan color, and comes in sizes 5-11, in a Medium B width.

LL Bean’s describes these this way: “exceptional softness and durability make moosehide an ideal choice for slipprs. Fully lined with plush polyester fleece to keep your feet warm and comfortable on chilly winter days. Full-length foam insole cushions each step”.

The lining looks like a black and white plaid flannel, but just as the company describes, it is more like a thicker fleece, and it is very soft and plush. There is a good amount of padding, both on the sides of the slipper and on the bottom of the foot bed.

They have a tongue of sorts that extends over the top of the foot, reminding me of the look of a penny loafer. The size is embedded in the rubber on the bottom of the sole, and the LL Bean tag is clearly attached to the edge of the scuff.

Thoughts

I purchased these for my husband a year ago at Christmas. After a few months they started to really smell bad, and I contacted LL Bean, as they have a lifetime satisfaction guarantee on all of their products. They said this shouldn’t happen and asked me to return them in exchange for another pair. I did so, and within a few months the new pair had problems. The stitching along the sole (which is a very long basting stitch), starting coming loose and you could see where the slipper was coming away from the sole.

Again, I contacted LL Bean and they again exchanged them for another new pair. When the third pair arrived, they seemed very narrow, especially for a medium width slipper. Even my husband didn’t think they were the same slipper that I had just returned. However, after wearing them for a few weeks now, they have stretched out and are as comfortable as his former two pair were.

I have worn these on occasion, and they are really comfortable slippers. They are so nice because they slip on quickly and easily. When I put my LL Bean Wicked Moccasins on, I have to use both hands because of the fluffy sheepskin lining, but his slip on and off with ease. My husband has small feet, he wears a size 8, and he actually takes a size 9 in these scuffs, so I believe they probably run a little small. I have slipped them on a few times when I needed to run out in the yard and get our dog when she was barking. They are a little big for me, but work okay in a pinch.

The design of these scuffs, with a gently rounded toe, makes them comfortable with enough wiggle room for the toes. We have noticed that the padding gets worn down a bit, and there are small indentations in the heel and toe area where the foam has been compressed. Still, they remain comfortable to wear around the house.

My husband finds these very comfortable. When it came time to return the second pair to LL Bean, I asked him if he wanted to choose another pair. LL Bean would gladly have refunded our money if we chose not to exchange them, but my husband wanted me to order the same exact pair that he had been wearing.

These retail for $69.99, which is quite over priced in my opinion, especially considering the quality issues we had with the first two pair. However, they are now on sale for $39.95, which is about what I would be willing to spend on them. I don’t recall what I paid originally, but I have an LL Bean Visa card and get coupons off of LL Bean products with it, as well as free shipping when I order from their company. Can’t beat that!
