Since I started using LUSH products, I had the opportunity to try all of the various buttercreams save one. There was Almond and Skinny Dip and Lemslip and Ring of Roses and Heavenly Bodies. But the one I hadn’t tried was Emperor of Ice Cream.

I was reticent because the last product I had tried from LUSH that touted mango as an ingredient was a bath melt, You’ve Been Mangoed. I was expecting something mango scented and it just wasn’t. I simply didn’t want to spend the money on Emperor of Ice Cream not knowing what the scent actually was.

A look through the ingredients was promising with vanilla pod infusion, orange blossom honey, cocoa butter, macadamia nut oil, mango butter, shea butter, jasmine absolute, ylang ylang oil, rose absolute, and lavender absolute. Hmmm. Should be floral with vanilla and a little bit of fruit.

I still wasn’t ready to pony up the cash but when I was purchasing something else at my not-so-local LUSH store, I was offered a free sample of Skinny Dip. I very nicely asked if they had any Emperor of Ice Cream since that was the only one I hadn’t yet tried. The consultant was more than happy to switch samples for me.

When I got home and opened the container, what awaited me wasn’t anything like the fragrance I was expecting. Not even close.

Foot Funk.

I used to skate 4 to 5 times a week. One of my friends who skated used to use a Dr. Scholl’s spray in her skates to take care of foot odor. I never noticed a nasty odor coming from anyone else’s figure skates but hers - hockey is a different beast altogether. The combination of whatever rank stuff was in her skates plus the really nasty Dr. Scholl’s odor is almost an exact match for Emperor of Ice Cream.

If the scent is one that appeals to you (and it seems to appeal to many), keep in mind that buttercreams are not body butters nor are they soap. Buttercreams are all formulated for different skin types but they contain 15% soap and don’t lather up. Some are softer than others and LUSH Emperor of Ice Cream is one of the hardest and more “soap-like” in appearance than all but one of the other various buttercreams LUSH manufactures.

To use LUSH Emperor of Ice Cream, as with other buttercreams, do not attempt to use the entire slab of product at one time if you are planning to take it into the shower. Cut off a slice and use that instead. With Emperor of Ice Cream, if you work it hard enough, you’ll get a little lather but not much. It remains hard and sort of becomes slippery. I don’t find it very moisturizing but I never used it long enough to truly find out. It does leave a film on the skin. Unlike other buttercreams, the scent on this one sticks around for a while. Why do the nice scented products dissipate while the stinky stuff sticks?

As for appearances, LUSH Emperor of Ice Cream is sort of a dark ivory with orange toned color. It comes with a vine leaf on top which is easily removed.

I just can’t see myself ever purchasing this product. That’s okay. LUSH has plenty of other products to try, most of which I would never repurchase.
