I have a bad back. A terrible back, in fact. Spinal fractures as a child, damaged discs as a teen, and then a whopper of a car accident in my late twenties leaving me with sometimes crippling sciatica pain. My back hurts a lot more often than it doesn’t.

A lot more.

In preparation for this year’s giganto vacation, I found myself lingering in front of the “ouchie feet shoe insert” display at the local grocery. So many different inserts, so many claims of pain relief. I wound up pulling every insert down and carefully reading the packaging. Out of all the inserts (Dr. Scholl’s and other brands), one stood out for me.

Dr. Scholl’s® Extra Support Insoles

Dr. Scholl’s® Extra Support Insoles claim to be specifically designed for heavier folks who suffer lower back pain and foot pain and fatigue from extra pressure. That, ladies and gentlemen, would be me.

I didn’t buy them right away, mind you. See, they’re marketed for men, and, while I wear men’s shoes more than anything else, a niggling voice in my head warned me that there might actually be a difference here. So before buying, I called my Mom’s podiatrist. What did he tell me?

Doesn’t matter. The labeling as a “men’s” insert refers solely to the sizing. Of course, he also told me not to put much hope or faith into inserts, but that it couldn’t hurt to try. Thanks, Doc!

Dr. Scholl’s® Extra Support Insoles are big, bumpy, and come in a decidedly outdoorsy green and tan color scheme. The tan bumpy bits are gel-like and rest under the pressure points of heel and balls of the foot, the green part is the arch support. Because of this, size really does matter here—if you have smaller feet (which I do not), these will be too big for you, and your feet won’t rest on the right spots. These are designed for men’s sizes 8-13. I am a men’s size 8-8 ½.

Yeah, yeah, get the Sasquatch jokes out of the way now.

Upon getting Dr. Scholl’s® Extra Support Insoles out of the packaging (a feat unto itself thanks to the nuke-proof blister-pack plastic), I was pleased to see that the insoles have indented guides for cutting down to size. That certainly makes the job easier. A pair of sharp AND strong scissors is necessary for the trimming job. Rather than rely upon the indentations, I used them as a loose guide and cut one size bigger than my shoe size. I’m glad I did—had I cut down to the size 8, I’d have taken too much.

First steps in Dr. Scholl’s® Extra Support Insoles were heavenly, but strange. A comfy, squooshy, gel-y feel that was actually a little off-putting at first. Too soft, too bouncy. The only thing that saves these inserts from being totally sinky-inny is the green Arch Guard®, which is less cushy, more substantial.

My first few days of using Dr. Scholl’s® Extra Support Insoles weren’t a fair test—I stuck close to home, puttered about in the yard a bit, but nothing strenuous. At about week one, I decided to try them out grocery shopping. See, slogging about on hard cement or tile floors is a sure way to get my back to sing. So what better test, right?

Right.

I’d like to say that Dr. Scholl’s® Extra Support Insoles made a difference. I’d like to say that my feet didn’t ache and my back didn’t scream. Heck, I’d LOVE to say those things.

But I’d be lying.

Dr. Scholl’s® Extra Support Insoles didn’t do a darned thing for my back. Not even a little bit. I wasn’t looking for a miracle here (though I’d have welcomed one if it had come my way). Rather, I was looking to get either a little more mileage out of my back before it seized up OR a lessening of the pain when it did clamp down on me. A little less foot ball ache would have been nice, too. I got neither of those things. What I got was a very squooshy feeling foot ache and utterly typical back pain. I continue to use these now well-traveled insoles because . . . well, because they are squooshy, but it’s been a couple of months now, and I see no improvement, no difference at all.

And that’s it, then. Dr. Scholl’s® Extra Support Insoles didn’t do the job for me. My feet are still sore at the end of the day, and my back still squeals after just a few minutes of walking. I’m sure that my back problems and my foot ouchies are just too big and bad for poor Dr. Scholl. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed. Perhaps, if you need only the tiniest bit of lower back relief, the itsiest little scrap of foot pain relief, these insoles will help you. But don’t get your hopes up.

One last thing: while Dr. Scholl’s® Extra Support Insoles aren’t wildly expensive, I do consider 18 bucks a bit of an investment for something that didn’t help me even a little. To be fair, I’ve tried other inserts, and they didn’t help, either.
