The heavy aromas typically associated with traditional perfumes and eaus de toilette usually wind up making my sensitive nose itch, so I tend to steer clear of them, instead favoring milder, more fruity scents like orange, grapefruit, cherry, apple, and during the Fall months, pumpkin. One could accurately assert that I’m not much of a scent adventurer.
I surprised myself during a recent trip to Bath and Body Works when I boldly picked up a bottle of Sea Island Cotton Shower Gel and gave it a big, hearty sniff. I was pleasantly surprised by what I found inside of that bottle, so I bought it for $3 - a substantial bargain, given that retail is $9.50 for a bottle - during the semi annual sale that just happened to be going on at the time.
The Scent
The aroma of the gel was surprisingly light and crisp. I’d been half-expecting it to have a distinctly artificial smell, almost something akin to a heavily scented detergent. Instead, the scent was light and airy, and strangely enough, it actually made me think of clean, fresh cotton sheets. It conjured up images of warm days at a beach or pleasant romps through fields of dewy grass. There’s nothing sugary or sweet about the scent; in fact, I’d call it more of a milk musk. If I had to describe it, I’d call it a pleasant blend of baby powder, clean linens, light florals and fresh air.
The Packaging
Sea Island Cotton Shower Gel is available in 10-ounce bottles at Bath and Body Works brick and mortar stores, and in the online shop. The bottle is made of plastic and features a photo of fresh cotton on the label.
The Cost
One 10-ounce bottle of Sea Island Cotton Shower Gel retails for $9.50, but be on the lookout for sales. One can frequently find better deals both in-store and online.
The Product at Work
It’s easy to use this shower gel. To dispense the product, simply flip open the top, and squeeze a dime to quarter sized amount of the clear, light blue shaded gel onto a washcloth or mesh sponge. I suggest using a mesh sponge to guarantee maximum lather. Then, apply the thick, rich gel from head to toe and enjoy the scent while you shower. I find that the smell actually helps me to relax, and I’m a fairly tense person by nature, so that’s no small feat! When you’re finished, the gel rinses clean and leaves skin lightly scented.
Criticisms
I have two small criticisms of this product. The first is that the scent - since it’s so mild - doesn’t last particularly long once the shower is over. The second is that my skin never feels particularly moisturized after using the gel. To combat these ‘problems’, simply purchase a bottle of Bath and Body Works Sea Island Cotton Body Lotion, which also retails for $9.50 for an 8-ounce bottle, but can frequently be found on sale for less.
Overall Impressions
Overall, I recommend Bath and Body Works Sea Island Cotton Shower Gel for its fresh, clean scent and for its easy-rinse formula. If you’re looking for a new scent that’s not too heavy and not sticky-sweet, stop by a store near you and give it a sniff. Hopefully it won’t disappoint!
