When she’s ready to step up to a split sole, step into the Bloch S0258G. It’s a wonderful continuation of the ballet shoe most beginners prefer. Includes pre-sewn elastic.

DramaGirl inherited my wide feet, which I’m sure she’ll curse me for in time. For now, however, this isn’t a huge deal, except when you’re searching for dance shoes, as ballet slippers are usually made for the daintiest of feet.

Enter our favorite ballet shoe maker, Bloch shoes. The Bloch shoe company started in 1932 when Jacob Bloch, a European in America, made a ballerina a “better” pair of pointe shoes. The company prides itself on listening to dancers’ needs when designing and creating their dance shoes and apparel.

They must have listened to wide-footed ballerinas that have gone before us, because the Bloch Dansoft Split Sole (S0258G) ballet slipper has been the only one we’ve been able to find in wide sizes for the past three years. For the four years prior to that, the dance studio didn’t require split soles, and the shoe itself was always more generously cut.

This year, we just purchased our third pair of Bloch Dansoft Split Sole shoes. The ballerina pink upper is a very soft, supple leather, with an elastic band around the top that can be tied at the front of the opening closest to the toe. The liner on the inside of the shoe is all cotton, which is very good for hard-working dancers.

As the name of the shoe implies, the sole is split, which means that instead of a single leather bottom the length of the shoe, the Bloch Dansoft Split Sole has two leather pads on the bottom of each shoe. One near the heel and one near the toe. The leather upper is gathered and sewn into the front of the toe pad. The Bloch Dansoft Split Sole shoes also come with four thick elastic bands to be sewn over the instep, if needed.

We have been to numerous dance stores and have scoured the internet, and the Bloch Dansoft Split Sole ballet flat is the only one we’ve found that comes in four widths (A-D) for girls. For the past three years, each pair of shoe has taken a beating, but looked just as good at the recital as it did nine months earlier when dance season started. I’ve found the shoe for $23 at my local shop, or $18 at online discount sites. Since I like to support local economy, I usually prefer to go the local route.

We’ve been very, very happy with the Bloch Dansoft Split Sole ballet flat, and as long as DramaGirl’s dance studio requires a split sole student shoe, this is the one we’ll be buying.
