Our son is 2 and a half years old. A few months ago he had broken out with a rash on his cheeks and on his elbows. We asked his doctor because it looked like poison ivy. He said that it was eczema and that we should keep moisturizing it with lotion alternating with calamine. I asked him about Aveeno Anti-Itch Cream because it has calamine in it. We already had some because not long before that, our daughter had a chicken pox breakthrough and that was what we used. He said we could use this and that’s what we did. We bought this cream at our local Kroger for a little less than $4.00 and it has helped with a few things.

Description

Aveeno Anti-Itch Cream comes in a tube packaged in a small cardboard box. The box is designed like the tube is. The box is cream colored and says Aveeno in black lettering and also says that there is calamine in the lotion. There is a pink area on the cardboard backing to the box that says “Fast-Acting Soothing Itch Relief”. I’m guessing that the pink area is there because it has calamine in it. On the box it also has a blue banner running the length of it and in the cream color lettering it says “Calamine & Pramoxine HCL” and underneath that it says “ANTI-ITCH CREAM”.

The tube is a 1 ounce tube. It is cream colored like the box and has the same design and says the same thing. It also says ”with Natural Colloidal Oatmeal” in blue lettering on the tube. The cap is blue and it screws on at the end. On the back of the tube lists the uses, warnings, directions, and the active ingredient.

The lotion is pink and it is thick and creamy. If you know what calamine smells like, this is exactly like how it smells. It’s not pretty. If anything has calamine in it, it seems to smell like it. I don’t think there is a way around it.

Active Ingredients

Calamine 3% , Pramoxine HCL 1%

The inactive ingredients are not on the tube. I do not have the box anymore to list them. It does have Colloidal Oatmeal, Hydrocortizone, and Camphor as well.

Uses: For the temporary relief of pain and itching associated with minor skin irritations. This cream is great to use for eczema, chicken pox, poison ivy/oak, insect bites, etc.

Directions: Adults and children 2 years of age and older: Apply to affected area not more than 3 to 4 times daily. Children under 2 years of age: do not use, consult a doctor.

Performance/Opinion

With our son’s eczema problem, this stuff worked great! We only put it on his rash twice a day and it cleared up 3 days later. Each day it got progressively better. He was irritable and was scratching at his face and arms before we put this stuff on him. Afterward, he was just fine. It didn’t seem to bother him at all. It had the same effect on our daughter’s breakthrough chicken pox. She didn’t have many at all but they cleared up after a couple days and this stuff stopped them from itching her.

The lotion/cream also rubs in easy. It actually absorbs into the skin and the rash without leaving the spots pink like calamine lotion does. You won’t see any on you. Any lotion that wasn’t absorbed into the skin will dry without pink residue. It dries quickly too. You really don’t need to rub it on much either and it doesn’t irritate the affected area when applying it. It doesn’t leave a greasy feeling either.

This stuff also keeps coming in handy because I had a few spots on my arm that looked like it could have been poison ivy or something of the sort last week. It was itching pretty badly and I didn’t want to scratch it so I used this handy stuff. It was an immediate relief! It stopped the itch and it was pretty soothing! Aveeno Anti-Itch Cream (calamine or not) is great to keep on hand. It helps with a lot of things including bug bites! It may not smell the greatest but what lotion with calamine really smells any good? I recommend using this product if the situation ever calls for it!

Again, not suitable for children under 2 years of age. You should wash your hands after use and avoid contact with the eyes.
