Ahhh tampons. Some people are really squeamish when they have to walk into a store and buy them. Me, I could care less who sees me buying them and yes, I am one of those ultra annoying coupon clippers that make your wait in line just a tad bit longer. I have an extremely hard time understanding how women can use pads exclusively; to me they are like diapers and they get all bunched up around your bummie when you sit. I’ll take the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome in exchange for some comfort when I have my period. And with that said, I probably just jinxed myself. I happened upon the unscented version of the Playtex Sport Super tampons when I was in a pinch and found myself out of them at home. Necessity might be the mother of invention but running out of tampons really sucks when you only have 12 different boxes on the grocery store shelf to pick from.

Playtex Sport Unscented Super

First off, for those who don’t wear tampons, the listing of this needs to be explained. They are in the Super class of tampons meaning the size / absorption of them. Unscented means that there are no scents or perfumes added to them [which is a good thing]. The listing name “super unscented” would not only be confusing to non-tampon wearing people but a complete oxymoron. With that explained, on to the review. The Playtex Sport tampon has a plastic applicator with a very thin push applicator to it; it is about the size of a coffee stirrer so it is a far cry from the round cardboard applicators that other tampons have. Each tampon is individually wrapped and oh my, they have cute little inspirational saying on them. I didn’t notice them on the first few but was sucked into reading them all to see if they were random or if there were more than a few phrases to give me a little pep talk when I was in the bathroom changing my tampon.

Here are some of the many phrases that you will come across on the wrappers. I would have rather had the name of the product [Playtex Sport] and the size [Super] on the wrapper so I could toss the box out and still know what size tampons I was getting ready to use. “You’re a take-charge kind of girl“, “No distractions .. just pure concentration“, “Keep doing what you do best“, “Strong bodies. Strong minds“, “Go for it!“, “Get out there and show ‘emm what you got.“, “Just get in the game” and “Go team!

These are the Super size tampons and have the capability of absorbing 9 to 12 grams of liquid. What can be a determining factor in that? Clots, not having the tampon positioned correctly, urine leakage and not having it inserted all the way. Because of the weird stick applicator [instead of a full sized tube], it can be a little hard to get this positioned correctly and that is key not only to comfort but to getting the tampon to do its job correctly. If you don’t get it in far enough then when you go to pee there is a chance that it will end up getting on to the tampon. Urine is sterile as it leaves the body but you have to admit, it is pretty gross to think about your tampon being soaked in not just blood but urine too. Personally, I don’t think that these are as absorbent as other tampons in the same class. The design might be great for some people but for me it just wasn’t wide enough to help with clotting and the extremely heavy days. The Super Plus ones weren’t much better; they didn’t provide much more protection even though they are rated for 12 to 15 grams of absorption.

Can you really get Super protection from these? Yes and no. If you are a heavy bleeder you will get good protection from leaks but you will have to change them more often because of the short but thick design of them. Kotex Security tampons are long and somewhat chubby so you are going to get more protection if you have clots as the clots will get stuck [temporarily] behind the tampon. With the Playtex Sport, well, they are short and fat so if you are prone to clotting there is a chance that one will slip past the tampon and cause a rather embarrassing moment. This is even more likely if your tampon is partially soaked, if you have that feeling and know that the clock is ticking, if you are wearing one of these don’t wait until the last possible minute to change it or it will end up biting you in the butt.

Normally I stock up on tampons when they are on sale but hey, there are times when I am certain that there is another box or two in the bathroom closet and there isn’t. I had to get a box of the Super and Super Plus but had coupons for a dollar off a box. They were on sale for two boxes for $6.00 so I got lucky. The end price per box was $2.50 and I figured that even if they didn’t work all that well, they would be good to have for spares or in the case of an emergency. The usual selling price at my grocery store is $3.99 so I did make out on the deal. It really pained me to pay that for the 16 count box when I could have spent another dollar and gotten the larger sized box of Kotex Security at Wal-Mart but when you are in that type of situation you can’t run the risk of getting caught at the wrong place at the wrong time. These are available in a scented version but there is no way I would ever go that route again. I had issues with the scented tampons leaving me extremely irritated and even though the company said that they had never had a complaint about it, I know it was the scent that made me irritated.

The Bottom Line

Would I buy these again? Knowing what to expect from a tampon and how will it will perform on certain days is half the battle. If they were on sale and I had coupons for them I would buy them again but there is no way that either of them would be used on the heaviest of days. They are comfortable if you can get them inserted correctly but because of the small push applicator and the short fat body of the tampon that isn’t always the case so be prepared to waste a few of these when you misfire them. For medium flow days these are good if you are going to be out and about but if you are trying them for the first time make sure you know exactly where the bathrooms are at the mall or wherever you plan on being. Leaks can and will happen with these so you may have to bump up to the next level of protection if you want to feel a little more safe and secure when out and about.

As always, thanks for the visit…
